You’re ready to start working for yourself, but how do you conduct a work from home job search?

Before quitting your job to pursue your dream of working for yourself, it would be a good idea to get organized. You want to go into your work from home job search knowing exactly where to look, what your qualifications are, and what your options are. Here are some things to consider:

1. What are your qualifications? If you have a degree and experience under your belt, you may be able to use those to help you find the perfect at home job. Use what you know to find what you want to do.

2. Can your current position translate into a work from home job? If you’re an accountant, it wouldn’t be outside of the realm of possibility to start a home accounting business. If you’re a secretary, perhaps a Virtual Assistant business is an avenue to consider.

3. Do you want to work for yourself, or are you interested in telecommuting? It helps if you know what you want before launching your work from home job search. What do you want to do? How many hours a work do you want to work?

4. Check with your current employer and see if you can telecommute rather than work on-site. Some companies are open to this, many aren’t. You’ll never know if it’s a possibility if you don’t ask. By telecommuting, you may be able to maintain some of the benefits you currently have, but won’t have to deal with the office politics.

5. Do have the skills and the equipment to work from home? Most telecommuting jobs require you to have high-speed internet, and all you have is dial-up. Be honest about what equipment and skills you have and seek only those jobs that will meet those requirements.

It’s unrealistic to think that you can find an online work from home job quickly and effortlessly. Quite often it can take months, if not years, to get to the point where you’re making the same amount of money as your currently full-time position. Be prepared to stay where you are until you can match those earnings, and then, and only then, you can feel confident enough to quit your job.

Besides telecommuting, are there other ways to earn money from home? You bet there are! If writing is your forte, you may be able to work as a freelance or ghostwriter. Excellent writing and grammar skills are needed. There are many direct sales companies to choose from, but you’ll want to carefully research each one before choosing one to join. Many people consider mystery shopping as an option for working from home but these positions are limited if you’re not in a large metropolitan city.

And if you have a mini-gym or a small work-out room in your house, you can get the exercise much needed by your body.

Work at Home Typing for Others

For many years I searched for a way to work from home using my computer as a way to earn a full-time income. I finally have that satisfaction now because I have found a way to type at home for others.

I first began doing transcription work at a financial services firm I worked at from 1991 to 2004. Some time went by and one of the accountants that I had worked with contacted me to see if I would like to be his personal transcriptionist from my home. I figured this would be a good way to supplement my income so I accepted, and that’s exactly what this work turned out to be.

All of the work I do for him is handled via the internet. He emails me the voice file and I type it and email him back the typed Word document. Simple!

As time went by and my frustration with ‘office politics’ grew, and I knew I had to find some way to turn this transcription work into my full-time business. I found it somewhat difficult to find others like this accountant who would like me to type up their information for them and was not keen on the idea of typing resumes all day.

I began searching online for companies that hire independent contractors to do transcription work for them. What a search it was! I found that in addition to the intermingled transcription businesses out there on the internet were a whole slew of ‘get-rich-now-typing-from-home’ schemes. Many of them sound so promising, that I must admit I was ****** in to trying a few. Some are now making me a little money, but most are sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

I finally was able to find websites that truly want people to succeed in the transcription business and listings of the businesses that really do hire transcriptionists. The first company I found said it wasn’t hiring at the time but that I could leave my email address and would be notified when they were hiring again.

Six months went by and I had long given up on the hope of doing transcription full-time from my home, when lo and behold, they emailed me to say they were hiring and I could test for them if I was interested. I went through the testing and finally scored my first position with a national transcription business as an independent contractor.

During their hiring period we all had more work than we could handle. It was great! But then I realized that they had hired so many ICs (independent contractors) that the work was getting hard to come by. I decided the only thing to do was to secure positions with other transcription businesses to make sure I had a full schedule each week.

I now work exclusively with four transcription companies, one of whom is only quarterly work, one I have to set a schedule two weeks in advance and log in for my scheduled time, one calls me with each job to see if I want it, and the other has me email them how much time I’m available for each day/week and they send me that much work.

So, finally, I can say I work from home full-time with legitimate companies and it’s everything I thought it would be and more! I work when I want and from the comfort of home. The pay is comparable to what I made in offices but the freedom is worth more than the money.

These are just tactics to get you excited to sign up with them and make them more money.

3. Not researching enough. Some things need to be done before you can start a work at home business. Discovering your niche and finding out who your target audience is need top be researched. Knowing the demand for your product or services is also important. Strengthen your business from the get go by doing research in advance.

4. Poor choice of product. Choosing a product that is difficult to sell because there is no demand for it, a product that is of poor quality or one that makes very little profit can ruin a work at home business. The future of your business is dependant on your product and customer service. Your business will suffer if either of these is lacking.

5. Not having clearly set goals. Every business needs a game plan. You need a list of clear cut goals for your work at home business to map out your success. Winging it is not necessarily the best way to go as far as business practices.

6. Having trouble separating work and home life. It’s late, you need to put dinner on the table, get the kids to bed and finish the laundry. The only thing is you still have work to do. Finding balance between work and home life can be a challenge for work at home business owners.

7. Quitting your day job too soon. Quitting your day job before securing enough income from your home based business can prove to be a big mistake, especially if you depend on your job for health insurance, stock options, retirement benefits or other company perks.

The truth is that one third of small businesses fail within the first two years. You can avoid being a part of this statistic by being prepared and avoiding common pitfalls associated with work at home businesses.
