There’s no shame in being scammed. It happens to everyone. It may seem like ripping the scammers tongue out is too kind for them. But there are some options you have to make things right.

There is a story about a man in Denver who just graduated from college and needed work. He couldn’t find employment anywhere, and decided to work at home with an online company that specialized in data entry. He was a smart guy, but admittedly gullible to the point where he believed everyone on their word, no matter how often he got burned.

He signed on with a data entry service that charged him a monthly fee of $10.00. Since he’d never had a work at home job, he couldn’t tell if that was the norm, so he paid it. He set up a direct debit with them so the fee could be taken out of his account every month.

He was sent an email with a list of data he needed to enter into a template he had to download, and was paid $.05 per page of entered data. This originally sounded good to him. But, he’d spent almost $80,000 to get his degree and after doing math wound up making a whopping $1.00 every twenty pages.

However, that $.05 per page was reset after each assignment, which had a maximum page count of 8 or 9. That meant that if he worked all day, which he did, he made about $5.25. And each month, when they took out their fee, it made a real difference. Also, when he quit the company continued withdrawing money from his bank account.

This is not uncommon. When you take a job you need to be especially careful of scams like this one that have you doing too much work for almost no money. What can you do when that happens? First and foremost, if you can’t find any information about a company online then don’t take the job. Let someone else do the dirty work; let them get hoodwinked first.

It sounds mean, but why should you take the fall? You can’t afford to get scammed, so don’t be “that guy”. The other thing you can do is report it on sites that specialize in work from home scams. There are blogs you can post your comments or complaints on about any job you’ve been bamboozled by. Unfortunately there is hardly any legal recourse for you. Once it’s happened, it’s happened. The reality is, once you’ve been swindled, you can’t be un-swindled. It happened; now move on to a good job.

Many work at home jobs are sometimes thought of as low-end employment. That’s not the case. There are real jobs and real careers out there for hard workers with the proper experience. Just because you got scammed once doesn’t mean it has to happen again. A rule of thumb is to never give out any personal financial information to anyone over the internet for a work at home position. PayPal payments are usually a sure indicator that the employer is legit. So, take a breath, step back and then move forward with your new work from home position.

Advice for potential work from home job seekers: don’t start working from home until you’ve read others reviews of the company you want to work for, or the business you want to get involved with, thoroughly so you can determine if it’s legitimate. There are a lot of scams out there! Companies usually do not require a fee to work from home, except for a few exceptions, like LiveOps and Babytobee, which require fees for a background check. These fees are paid to the company doing the background check, however. Business opportunities will require a fee to get started, however.

Look to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to find information on businesses It has info on businesses and charities that are and are not registered with the BBB. You can contact your local BBB or check the USA’s or Canada’s sites. To search, you need at least the company’s name and sometimes the city and state where the business is located.

If you are unsuccessful finding information through the Better Business Bureau, the next best thing is to do a Google search for the business. Simply type tbe name of the business into Google. It helps if you know the exact spelling of the business name, but if you don’t the correct name will still often come up in the search. For example, typing MaryKay in Google will still bring up Mary Kay Cosmetics.

There are also several message boards you can go to for information on business opportunities. If you are unable to find any information on the business opportunity or company you’re interested in getting involved with, you can often register and post on the message board and you will get a response. One such message board is Work from Home Mafia. This site contains information on many different work from home companies and business opportunities - and many people have posted other questions on these companies, so your question may already be answered. Work from Home Mafia also has podcasts on different work from home related topics that you can listen to right on the site or download to Itunes and listen to them from there, or put them on your Ipod.

Another message board that has a lot of information on work from home opportunities is Workplace Like Home. It has forums on many of the same companies that Work from Home Mafia does, plus some that work from Home Mafia doesn’t have, like Stewart Response Group and Ecallogy. Another way to find the legitimacy of a certain working from home business is to ask people you know have worked from home. Sometimes you may not know anyone who has worked from home, such as when I got my first job with West Telemarketing. I did find that it was legitimate and it led to other legitimate working from home jobs, some that I have found through previously mentioned methods and other’s I’ve found through contacts I’ve made.

Don’t start working frome home until you’ve read others reviews the company you want to work for on the previously mentioned sites. These sites have a lot of valuable information for people who potentially wantt to work from home, not to mention they’re a great place to network! Networking, after all, is critical whether you work from home or out of the home.

I can’t say it enough - don’t start working from home until you’ve read others’ reviews of the company you want to work from home for, or the business you want to get involved with. Working from home or having your own homebased business can be very rewarding - people I know that have been working from home have been able to spend more time with their families and children, not to mention save gas and wear and tear on their vehicles. This is especially critical considering the price of gas lately!! Working from home has been rewarding for me not because I’ve saved on gas, but I’ve saved on cab and bus fare because I don’t drive due to the fact that I have epilepsy. I’ve been working from home for about 5 years now, and I do not want to go back to working out of the home if I can avoid it! I’ve had many positive experiences working from home, however it does require being careful about the companies you apply with, or the online homebased business opportunity you’re interested in pursuing.
