5 Important
things you need To Know to Set Up Home Based Businesses
You’ve finally decided to go ahead and open a home based business.
Congratulations, you’ve made a decision that could literally change your life. Even if you’ve decided that you are
going to start small and don’t have huge expectations, you’re taking a step to own your financial future rather
than rely on the actions of others.
Home Based Businesses have any number
of fantastic benefits but there are pitfalls as well. In order to get off on the right step, keep in mind the
following steps in organizing and running your home based operation.
1. Have A Plan
If you really intend for this to be a for profit business, not a hobby,
then you have to have a business plan. No successful business is sustainable without a plan and this is one of the
major reasons for home based entrepreneurs fail.
You have to reduce to writing just what the mission is, what are you
selling and to whom, how you are going to accomplish the mission, and how you are going to measure your success.
You need to lay out a financial plan and do a short term forecast. Lay out a day by day activity plan that you can
work against. Lastly measure how well performance stacks up to the plan.
You may think that your business is too small to require all of this but
think of it as assembling a bicycle. Without the plan (instructions) you will either take far longer to assemble
the bike or you will assemble it incorrectly. The same thing applies to your home based business.
2. Create A Work Zone
If you are fortunate to have an office in your home you are way ahead of
the game. If you are like most people however, you’re going to have to create a work zone. This zone can be
anyplace in the house providing it has adequate space and lighting for the work, sufficient outlets for electrical
devices and can be isolated from other activities in the house. A corner in a bedroom or a converted closet or even
the garage can be converted into a functional work zone.
3. Minimize Distractions
Distractions can be huge time wasters for the home based business. Let
others in your family understand that when you are in your work zone you are at work and when you are done you will
“come home”. Until the end of that “work day” you’d appreciate their cooperation in letting you get the work
done.
Bigger than external distractions from family members are internal
distractions. It is so very easy to get wrapped up in non-productive activity like checking e-mail, hanging out in
forums, aimless YouTube searches that the day can go by and you have done nothing to advance the business plan.
Exercise some discipline and keep distractions to a minimum.
4. Become A Bookeeper
There are some fantastic tax benefits associated with home based
businesses but you won’t be able to take advantage of them if you don’t keep good records. Invest in an online
bookkeeping system. They are easy to learn, simple to use, generate informative reports and most of all, provide
you with the information that can save you significant money at tax time. Yes it’s kind of boring but it is an
important part of your business.
5. Know Licensing Requirements
If your city or county has a business license requirement, the time to
learn about it is not when you get a tax bill from them at the end of the year. Most cities and counties are tied
into state tax bureaus and can get your information if you declare any income on a 1099. The city assumes that if
you are receiving a 1099 you are in business for yourself and as such may be subject to any city license that may
be applicable.
Better to know what that fee is up front so you can adjust your pricing
accordingly rather than be surprised by a bill that includes late fees at the end of the year.
Obviously there are more challenges in starting a home based business but
these will give you a good solid start. Just keep the dream alive and persevere and you’ll be rewarded with a long
term source of income.
